Dec 29, 2020 · 2015 - 2020 Ford F150 - IWE problem - I just started experiencing a grinding noise while in 2WD in my 2018 F150 XL with 5200 miles. I took it to a nearby dealer and explained how it just started but goes away if I switch to 4WD Hi. I did a lot of research first on this forum and Youtube. I originally heard a grinding noise from passenger side. Assumed it was the IWE system. I changed the solenoid and it went away for a couple days but came back. I checked the vacuum and it looked good. Changed the check valve. From there the sound changed from grinding to squeaking. It has only happened when I get off the highway and switch to ...First, it would not shift into 4 wheel drive at all, high or low. It has the switch that you turn to shift it into 4x4. So we replaced the relays under the hood on the driver side. Now, it will shift into 4x4 high and low. But, It makes a really loud grinding noise up front. This is a common problem but it is an easy fix.Genuine Ford IWE Actuator ... Turns out it's an IWE issue. The 4x4 wants to engage for a moment and you get metal on metal. There's a TSB on it. They did the work under warranty and replaced the check valves. Do a search on YouTube under F150 IWE noise and you'll find some surprising similarities lol. Anyway, I left it at the dealer for about 2 hours and I was good to go.When the vacuum builds when the engine is started, the vacuum from the intake via a vacuum line exerts vacuum on the entire IWE system all the way to the actuators. Edit: the vacuum line from solenoid to actuators, not the line from solenoid to vacuum box / engine. Sounds like the iwe’s are not pulling in thus turning the front diff full time which will make a little noise but shouldn’t be excessive.I own a 2013 F-150 I bought in 2014.
